Starting something new can feel a little uncertain.

If you’ve never tried Reformer Pilates before, you might be wondering what the machine does, whether it’s going to be too hard, or if you need experience before you begin.

You don’t.

Here’s what to expect when you walk into your first Reformer class at Incline.

Group training session at Incline Body and Wellness in Lindfield, North Shore Sydney

What Is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a form of Pilates that uses resistance to build strength, stability and control through low impact, deliberate movement.

It’s not fast paced and it’s not momentum driven. The focus is on alignment, posture, breathing and controlled muscle engagement.

The Reformer machine adds spring resistance to traditional Pilates principles. The carriage moves back and forward on rails, and the springs can be adjusted to increase or decrease load.

That resistance can support you in some movements and challenge you in others, which makes it adaptable for beginners through to more experienced clients.

While the exercises may look simple, they require concentration and control. That’s why Reformer often feels more challenging than it appears.

What Happens in Your First Reformer Class?

When you arrive, you’ll be shown how the machine works.

We’ll explain how the springs adjust, where your hands and feet go, and how to move the carriage safely. You’re not expected to know anything beforehand.

Classes are structured and guided throughout. Exercises are demonstrated clearly, and there is coaching on positioning and form.

If something doesn’t feel right, it’s adjusted. Springs can be changed. Range of movement can be modified. You won’t be left guessing.

Your first session is about understanding the machine and learning how your body responds to it.

Is Reformer Pilates Hard for Beginners?

It can feel challenging, especially because it targets stabilising muscles that many people don’t use regularly.

You might feel muscles working that you didn’t know were there.

That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

Reformer can be adjusted for different levels. Resistance can be increased or reduced. Movements can be simplified or progressed.

You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to be strong. You just need to start where you are.

What Should You Wear to Reformer Pilates?

Wear comfortable activewear that allows you to move easily.

Fitted clothing is helpful so we can see your alignment and give clear guidance where needed. Grip socks are recommended for hygiene and stability on the machine.

Bring a water bottle and arrive a few minutes early if it’s your first class so you’re not rushed.

How Often Should Beginners Do Reformer Pilates?

If you’re new, starting with one to two sessions per week is realistic for most people.

That gives your body time to adapt and recover.

As you build strength and confidence, you might increase to two or three sessions per week, depending on your goals and schedule.

Consistency matters more than intensity. Regular sessions are what create progress.

Final Thoughts

Starting Reformer Pilates can feel unfamiliar at first.

The machine looks different. The movements are controlled. The challenge is subtle but real.

But once you understand how it works, it becomes straightforward.

You don’t need experience. You don’t need to be “fit enough.” You just need to begin.

If you’ve been considering trying Reformer Pilates in Lindfield or the Upper North Shore area, this is your sign to book your first class and see how it feels for yourself.
